Fort Myers, FL- The Alfred State baseball team split against Skidmore on the final day of the Gene Cusic Classic. The Pios dropped game one 6-5, before winning 12-11 in extra innings. The Pioneers move to 10-6 on the season.
Game Two – 12-11
Mason Williams picked up his first collegiate win after coming in relief and pitching 1.0 innings tallying a strikeout. Christopher Mattoon got the start an pitched 9.0 innings scattering eight runs over 11 hits with five strikeouts. At the dish, Zach Young went 5-7 with two doubles and four RBIs. Connor Kiefer went 4-6 with three doubles. Caleb Walker went 4-5 with a triple and the walkoff RBI single.
Skidmore got off to a hot start scoring four runs in their opening at-bat. The Pioneers answered with one run in the second and four runs in the third. Korsky reached on an error to lead off the second, He would go to third on a single by Walker, and would go home on an RBI groundout by Devin Mersmann to make it a 4-1 game. Then in the third, Elijah Barinas led off with a single up the middle. Young followed with an RBI double to left center  to make it a 4-2 game. Two batters later, Korsky put in a single through the left side to put runners on the corners. Then both runners would advance on a wild pitch to make it 4-3. After getting walked, Walker stole second before James Camacho notched an RBI single to tie the game at 4-4. Mersmann followed with the go-ahead RBI single to left field to make it a 5-4 game.
Skidmore regained the lead in the forth after scoring two runs to make it a 6-5 game. After a few scoreless innings, the game went into extras. Skidmore scored two runs in the 10th before the Pios answered with two of their own. With two outs, Kiefer stepped up and notched an double to left center. Barinas would reach on an error, as Kiefer went home to score. Then an RBI single from Young tied the game at 8-8.
In the 11th both teams scored a run, to keep the game tied and send it to the 12th. In the 12th then Thoroughbreds scored two runs. Then in the bottom of the 12th, scored three runs to walk it off. Â Kiefer ledoff with a double to left center. Barinas followed with an RBI single up the middle. Then Young stepped up to put in an RBI double down the left field line to tie the game at 11-11. Jordan Hughes was intentionally walked. After a Korsky sacrifice bunt, Walker walked off the game with an RBI single towards second base for the 12-11 win.
Game One – 6-5
In game one, Ryan Bailey got the start and pitched 6.0 innings allowing five runs on nine hits with five strikeouts. Spencer Riehler would suffer the loss. At the plate, Tyler Korsky led the way going 2-4 with both hits going for a double. Jordan Hughes notched a triple, while Gavin Lasko and Devin Mersmann added doubles.
The Pioneers got on the board first in their first at-bat. With two outs, Zach Young notched a single to right field, then Hughes followed with an RBI triple to center field for the 1-0 lead.
In the top of the third, the Pios added another run to their lead. Mersmann ledoff with a double to right center, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Connor Kiefer followed with an RBI single to center field for the 2-0 lead.
Later in the fourth, Korsky led off with a double to right center and two batters later Lasko put in an RBI double to left field for the 3-0 lead.
In the fifth, ASC got two runs across for the 5-0 lead. Elijah Barinas got walked to led off the inning, and would advance to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Korsky notched an RBI double to right center for the 4-0. Korshy would advance to third on a passed ball, before going home on an RBI single from Caleb Walker to make it a 5-0 game.
The Thorobreds made a late game rally and walked it off 6-5 in the seventh.
The Pioneers end the week 5-3. They will be back in action on Wednesday March 19th as they travel to U of R for a game at 4 pm.
