Fort Meyers, FL- The Alfred State baseball team took down Hiram in a close 2-1 battle. The Pioneers move to 7-4 on the year.
On the mound Jordan Hughes picked up the win after pitching six scoreless innings only allowing four hits and six strikeouts. Zachary Nelson notched the one innings save and tallied a strikeout. Hughes also went 2-4 at the plate with a double and one RBI. Anthony Snyder went 1-3 with a lone hit going over the fence.
The Pioneers were able to get some solid hits to open the game but couldn't get anything cross the plate until the bottom of the fifth when Snyder notched a two-out homerun over the left field fence for the 1-0 lead.
Later in the sixth, the Pios added an insurance run to make it a 2-0 game. With one out, Connor Kiefer tallied a single to center field, then stole second a few pitches later. Hughes followed with an RBI double down the left field line to make it a 2-0 game.
The Terriers were able to get a run on the board but could not get any closer as the Pioneers went on to win 2-1. ASC will get tomorrow off before taking on Wisconsin Lutheran on Wednesday March 12 at 9 am.
