Pios Fall Short In A Nail-Biter

Pittsburgh, PA- Alfred State men's basketball took a close loss to the Calow Celtics 62-59. After the loss, Pios fell to 3-22 on the season.

The Pioneers saw an all-around offensive contribution as four players had double digit points. Darius Cunningham and Dylan Perry dropped 14 points each while Michael Miller and Mason Putnam scored 12 each. On the defensive end, Miller tallied three steals and a block for Alfred. Cunningham led the way on the boards with nine rebounds.

Kicking off the action, Cunningham knocked down a triple less than a minute in. Afterwards, Putnam followed him up with a lay-in at 19:00. Both teams then went on to have an offensive drought as neither scored for another three minutes. Avery Cunningham stopped the drought as he scored a tough lay-in for the Pioneers.

Following some more back and forth, Pios began trailing. However, Miller notched a shot from behind the arc along with a Perry bucket to bring the deficit within just two (32-20).

After the halftime break, the Pioneers came into the action looking for a spark. Miller scored off his own steal as the Pioneers were down 42-34. After some time, the momentum began to swing towards Alfred. Putnam knocked down a shot from deep to which was immediately followed by Miller scoring at the hoop. Continuing from there, Perry knocked down a triple of his own to tie it all up 45-45 with 12:58 remaining.

Both teams kept battling back and forth for control of the game, but Perry would not let up for the Pioneers. Following his last triple, he went on to hit two more less than two minutes later along with a layup. Perry's hot hand would bring the Pioneers just a two point lead (53-51) half way through the final half.

The final minutes of the game came down to a game of free throws. Pios were unable to squeeze out the win as they fell 62-59 in what was a nail-biter.
