Alfred, NY – The Alfred State women's basketball came out victorious with a 63-51 win over the Wolves of Keuka College. After winning, the Pioneers improve to 2-4 overall.
The Pioneers saw four members of the squad end up in double figures.
Taylor Benjamin led the way with 13 points and two steals, while
Emeline Barton followed with 12 points, eight rebounds, and five assists.
Mallory Sprissler made her debut with 12 points, five rebounds, and one block along with a steal, all while shooting 100% from the field.
Jordan Niles tallied 10 points and seven rebounds while
Sarah Somers crashed the glass with 12 boards.
The Pioneers kicked off the action strong as they found a 7-2 advantage early off layups from Barton and Niles, along with a triple from Benjamin. After some time, the Wolves were able to even the playing field at 7-7. However,
Alyssa Auer dropped a bucket inside to bring the Pioneers back in front. Through some trips to the line and some buckets inside the paint from Benjamin and Sprissler, Alfred built a nine-point cushion heading into the second period of play, 18-9.
The momentum continued into the second quarter as the Pioneers began with an 11-0 run off efforts from Sprissler, Barton, and Searle, 29-9. Alfred continued to dominate throughout the remainder of the first half, maintaining a 15-point advantage heading into the break.
In the beginning of the third, the Wolves swung the momentum in their favor as they shortened the gap to within just 7, 37-30. At 5:24, Niles scored a layup in the lane to answer back. With the back and forth continuing, Keuka put up another bucket to which Niles responded with a triple, followed by a Somers lay-in, 44-32. Barton and Benjamin closed off the quarter 50-34 with shots from downtown.
In the fourth, Keuka slowly crept back into the game. With less than half the quarter remaining, the Pioneers' advantage was shortened to just eight, 53-45. Benjamin furthered the cushion with a shot from deep. The Wolves continued their efforts to get back in the game, but Alfred was able to hold them off, taking home the 63-51 victory.
The Pioneers will continue their four-game home stand as they face off against SUNY Poly next. Tip off is set for Wednesday, December 3
rd at 5pm.
