Alfred, NY- The Alfred State Volleyball team split the day to wrap up their week. The Pioneers swept Kueka 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-17), after falling to Muhlenberg (25-22, 23-25, 25-21, 20-25, 9-15. The Pios moves to 4-2 on the season.
The first set was touch and go for the Pioneers, as they were able to tack on a few kills off the bat by Caitlyn Gilman and Racquel Gerstenberger, giving them a 2-0 lead. As the Wolves and Pios battled, it wasn't until point 20 for ASC that gave them enough momentum to close out the set 25-20.
In set two, the Wolves got the first jump, landing them a 3-0 lead. Alayna Tomlinson rallied the team up and tacked on some kills. This led to a stream of points and kills for the Pioneers, as Nayomie Ferrer, Ava Wickes and Caitlyn Gilman were able to make some strong moves, earning them a 25-19 set win.

In set three Ferrer, Gerstenberger and Tomlinson were able to lay down some important kills, earning them the third and final win of the day. Nayomie Ferrer and Raquel Gerstenberger led the team in kills, each tallying 9, Alayna Tomlinson tacking on 7 on the day. Caley Larsen also tallied 10 digs in the match up against the Wolves.
In the game against Muhlenberg, both Racquel Gerstenberger and Nayomie Ferrer notched double-doubles. Gerstenberger came up with 18 kills and 15 digs, along with four aces. While Ferrer tallied 34 assists and 17 digs. Alayna Tomlinson also added double digit kills with 11, while Caley Larsen added 14 digs.
With a closely contested first set coming down to the last few points, the Pioneers tied the set at 22-22. ASC scored three straight to take the set, Gerstenberger notched a kill, followed by a Gabriella Thurmond block to get set point. Then Ferrer notched an ace to take the set 25-22.
Muhlenberg rallied to take set two, before the Pioneers answered to take set three. Joining the set late, the Pios found themselves down 20-17. After back-to-back Muhlenberg errors, Tomlinson tied the set with a kill. After two more Muhlenberg errors, Alfred State notched back-to-back solo blocks by Thurmond and Tomlinson to take set three 25-21.
Muhlenberg would go on to take the final two sets to get the win. The Pioneers will be back on the road next weekend for the Canton and Potsdam Tri-Match.
