Alfred, NY- Alfred State Football won their season opener in shutout fashion against the Anderson Ravens 13-0.
In today's low scoring grind it out game, Justin Horvath went 13-24 on the day for a 128 yards. Josh Graham racked up 98 yards on 21 carries, while Noah Currier ran for 43 yards on 15 carries. Frank Tomaro pulled in five receptions for 53 yards.
Defensively, Silas Egenlauf led the Pios defense with 14 tackles and eight solos. David Harrell added nine tackles with six of them being solos.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Pioneers got their first score of the 2024 season. The Pios started their first possession of the second in great field position after a Ravens fourth down fumble. Starting from the 14-yard line, Horvath found Currier for a seven-yard completion. Two plays later, Harvath found Tomaro over the middle for a five yard pick up and a first down. Then out of the wildcat, Nicholas Cuomo took the snap and ran up the middle for the Pioneer touchdown. Alexander Caufield added the extra point to make it a 7-0 game.
Later in the second quarter, Caufield capped off a 13-play drive with a 22-yard field goal to extend the Pioneer lead to 10-0 before halftime.
In the third quarter, Alfred State chewed up nine minutes a 17-play drive, that was capped off by a Caufield 27-yard field goal, to make it a 13-0 game. The Pioneers were able to hold off the Ravens offense the rest of the way, to pick up the shut-out win.
Alfred State will be back in action at Pioneer Stadium next Saturday 9/14, at 7 pm to take on University of Rochester.
