Alfred N.Y.- Alfred State women's volleyball dominates the day as they end the tri-match with two wins. Pios took down the Broncos in a sweep 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 27-15) and the Warriors 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-16). Pioneers move to 8-5 on the season.
In the first match against the Broncos, Racquel Gerstenberger and Nayomie Ferrer led the Pioneers with kills to help take the first match (25-19). Gerstenberger and Thurmond would lead the second set for Alfred State with 2 kills each, dominating the match 25-14. The third set quickly became a nail biter as both teams constantly tugged back and forth for the lead. Nevertheless, Pios won the match narrowly, ending with a score of 27-25 with Gerstenberger once again dominating for the win.
Pios dominate the Lycoming match up with Alayna Tomlinson and Gerstenberger leading the way. The first set started with Alfred down and fighting to get back in the game. After some perseverance, Alfred rallied together to take charge of the game and build a decent lead over Lycoming. Gerstenberger would get seven digs straight bringing the Pioneers who were down 6-5 to a lead of 14-7. After some more kills by Gerstenberger, Pios took the first set 25-21. Tomlinson led the second set for the Pioneers with 5 kills, ending the match 25-20. Caitlyn Gilman, Tomlinson, and Gerstenberger all rallied together to win the third set 25-16 and closing off the match. Alfred averaged 16 kills and 20 earned points for the match against Lycoming. Gerstenberger had 17 kills and Tomlinson 16, while Ferrer had 39 assists and Caitlyn Gilman four blocks.
Pios stay home and play Hilber College on Wednesday October 2, at 7 pm.
