Potsdam, NY- The Alfred State Volleyball team split the day at the Potsdam Tri-Match. After falling 3-1 (25-18, 17-25, 16-25, 25-27) to Potsdam, the Pioneers would sweep VSUJ 3-0 (25-13, 28-26, 25-20).
In the first match against Potsdam, the Pios came out strong and claimed the first set theirs. Unfortunately, they could not keep that momentum going as the Bears were able to grab the following and final 3 sets.
ASC was riled up after losing their last 2 matches as they came for vengeance this game. The Pioneers got a 3-0 lead with help from a Caitlyn Gilman kill. Alayna Tomlinson, Ava Wickes, Erin Gregoire and Racquel Gerstenberger all tallied kills to help the Pios win the first set 25-13. The second set was a nail bitter, as the Badgers found their momentum. With strong perseverance, the Pioneers were able to snag the win 28-26. Just like the first set, ASC jumped out strong, with a 3-0 lead, started by a Gerstenberger kill. There was a moment in the middle of the set that the Pios were down 16-14, but were quick to attack right back. The Pioneers were able to secure the third and final set win, 25-20.
Racquel Gerstenberger tallied 22 kills on the day, Alayna Tomlinson right behind her with 21 kills. Gabriella Thurmond also ended the day with 63 assists.
The Pioneers head to the Oneonta Tri-Match next weekend to face Oneonta and Hartwick College.
