Elmira, NY- The Alfred State Volleyball drops first game of the season against Smith, 3-1 (8-25, 17-25, 26-24, 14-25). ASC falls to 0-1 on the season.
Racquel Gerstenberger led the Pioneers offense with 10 kills, while adding nine digs, and an ace. Alayna Tomlinson led the team in digs with 11 and tallied eight kills. Nayomie Ferrer notched 20 assists, nine digs, and two aces.
ASC got off to a slow start, dropping the first two sets before rallying to take the third set. The Pios opened the set on a 6-2 run, that was sparked by a kill from Gabriella Thurmond, followed aces from Ava Wickes and Gerstenberger. Later in the set, Smith would rally back to take a 23-20 lead. A Gerstenberger kill pulled the Pios within two. After a Smith point, Caitlyn Gilman notched a kill, before back-to-back errors helped Alfred State tie the set at 24-24. Tomlinson then put in a kill and another error would give the Pioneers set three.
Smith answered winning set four to take the game. The Pioneers will be bake in action tomorrow for the second day of the Elmira Invite, as they take on Elmira at 11 am and SUNY Canton at 1 pm.
