Elmira, NY- The Alfred State Volleyball team picked up two wins on the day. They opened the day with a 3-0 win over Elmira (25-12, 25-17, 25-17). Then took down SUNY Canton 3-2 (17-25, 16-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-2).
In game one, Racquel Gerstenberger and Alayna Tomlinson tallied nine kills each. Along with her nine kills, Tomlinson added eight aces and seven digs, while Gerstenberger added nine digs and four aces. Nayomie Ferrer Santiago came away with 27 assists, nine digs, and three aces. At the net, Gabriella Thurmond notched three blocks.
After a back and forth start to the first period, the Pios went on an 8-1 run to take the 13-9 lead. On that run, Tomlinson tallied five aces. From the ASC would hold Elmira to three points as they went on to take the opening set.
The Pioneers carried that momentum into the second set, as they started on an 8-0 run. Alfred State was able to hold off Elmira the rest of the way as they picked up their first win of the season.
In the second game, SUNY Canton took the first two sets. Then the Pioneers rallied and won three straight sets to get the win. A-State will be back on the road next weekend as they travel to Delhi for the Delhi Invite.
