Alfred, NY- The Alfred State women's basketball team dominated the Hawks to pick up the 77-28 win in the conference opener. The Pioneers move to 2-6 on the year, and 1-0 against conference foes.
Sarah Somers led the way for Alfred with 16 points, seven rebounds and a block. Taylor Benjamin followed up with 15 points and orchestrated the offense with seven assists. Benjamin along with Josie Barton was active on the defensive end for the Pioneers tallying three and four steals respectively. Jenna George and Mary Gibson added points off the bench for ASC as they combined for a total of 22 points.
The Pioneers took the lead early, as they opened the lead 16-12 which they took into the second quarter. Somers led the Pioneers in the first half scoring with 11 points. Gibson had a strong first half with 10 points, 6 rebounds, and going 5-6 from the field.
Somers kicked off the first couple minutes of the half for Alfred with a made layup from Benjamin Dime. Benjamin then followed up with a made layup and a shot from long distance. Kristen Merrit also tallied two shots from deep for the third quarter.Â
In the fourth quarter, Pioneers continued to increase their lead over the Hawks. Somers, George, and Benjamin just wouldn't let up as Pios ended the game 77-28.
The Pioneers return to action this Saturday for their next conference match-up against La Roche at 4 pm.
