Alfred NY- Alfred State women's volleyball took down the Penn State Altoona Lions 3-1 (27-25, 17-25, 27-25, 25-21) in what was a nail biter. Pioneers move to 17-6Â on the season and 6-1 in conference play.
The Pioneers were led by Racquel Gerstenberger who tallied 21 kills and 20 digs. During that time, Gerstenberger tallied her 1,000th career kill on senior night. Alayna Tomlinson had a good day as she had 14 kills and 15 digs. Nayomie Ferrer also chipped in with 45 assists.
Pioneers kicked off the first set trailing behind the Lions. Two kills by Gerstenberger would keep the Pioneers in it. After some more back and forth, Caitlyn Gilman and Tomlison gave Alfred back-to-back kills to bring the deficit to 22-21. Â Erin Gregoire and Gerstenberger rallied together for the Pioneers with a kill each to win the set 27-25.
Pioneers fell in the second set. Gerstenberger, Gilman and Ferrer all fought to keep the team in it. The lady's notched 12 kill total for the set.
The third set was also a tight match as both teams fought for momentum. Gilman provided the Pioneers with a shift in momentum by shortening the deficit with two consecutive blocks. Gilman's blocks shortened the deficit to 15-13. Gerstenberger would assist in the Pioneers rallying by following with two kills to take the lead. The set ended with a Gerstenberger ace ending the set 27-25 Pios.
In the fourth set, the Pioneers went on a run as Gerstenberger helped the Pioneers take the lead and win after a 19-17 deficit. Gerstenberger would go on to notch 6 kills for Alfred to win the set and match in what was a nerve-racking match.
After the match, Pios head to Bradford, PA to play Pitt-Brad on Wednesday, November 6 at 7pm.
