Paxton, MA- The Alfred State football team suffered a tough loss 35-23 against Anna Maria. The Pioneers fall to 3-5 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.
Justin Horvath went 12-21 for 208 yards and a touchdown. Josh Graham led the rushing attack with 54 yards on 14 carries. Noah Currier had 120 yards on five receptions with a touchdown and added 30 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown. Frank Tomaro also had five receptions for 56 yards and a touchdown.
Chris Bergman tallied three interceptions and five tackles, while Silas Egenlauf came away with 10 tackles.
The Pioneers opened up the scoring on the first drive with a 25-yard field goal by Richard Brice II for the 3-0 lead.
After an Amcat touchdown, the Pios regained the lead early in the second quarter. Chase Shepanski opened the drive with a six-yard completion to Currier. Then on the next play, Horvath found Currier for a 66-yard touchdown reception and the 10-7 lead. Anna Maria would go on to score three more touchdowns to take a 28-10 lead into half.
Anna Maria scored another touchdown on the first drive of the second half for the 35-10 lead. The Pioneers answered with an 11-play 65-yard touchdown drive. Horvath found Tomaro on a 10-yard touchdown pass to make it a 35-17 game.
Later in the fourth quarter, Currier found the endzone for the third time this season to cap a 13-play 84-yard drive, that cut the lead down to 35-23. The Amcats were able to hold off the Pioneers the rest of the game to secure the win.
The Pioneers will be back at home next weekend on Nov 2 at 12 pm against Gallaudet for their regular season finale.
