Alfred, NY- The Alfred State volleyball team took a tough hard-fought loss against Penn State Behrend tonight in five sets (36-34, 25-18, 25-21, 25-22, 15-11). The Pioneers are now 12-6 on the season.
Alayna Tomlinson led the Pios in tonight's match-up with 21 kills and 17 digs.
Racquel Gerstenberger was right behind her with 19 kills and
Caitlyn Gilman with 9 kills and two blocks.
Nayomie Ferrer nailed 50 assists and 20 digs on the night.
ASC and PSB both came out strong in the first set, battling with hard attacks. The first set totaled to 36-34 as both teams competed, but when it came down to the wire, errors are what killed the Pioneers. The Lions held on to that momentum and took the second set as well, 25-18.
The Pioneers rebounded in set three. With the score 10-10, the Pios started a 4-0 rally with two kills by Gilman. ASC would expand on that lead after a 5-0 run to make the score 19-11. The Pioneers would go on to take set three 25-21.
In set four, ASC would carry that momentum as they took set four as well. Late in the set, with the score of 18-17, Lions way, Gerstenberger sparked a 6-0 run with a kill to put the Pioneers in front. On that run, Tomlinson tallied two kills as Ferrer notched a kill of her own. After some back-and-forth action, Tomlinson would then put in another big kill that would give the Pios a 24-22 lead. After a Lions error, Alfred tied the set score at 2-2.
Behrend rallied in the fifth set to take the win. The Pioneers will be back in action this Saturday at 1 pm against La Roche.
