Milton, MA- The Alfred State Football team dropped a hard-fought game against Curry College, 30-16. The Pioneers move to 2-4 on the season as they head into conference play.
Justin Horvath went 20-33 for 325 yards and a touchdown. Josh Graham rushed for 47 yards on 11 carries. Evan Bowen tallied five receptions for 167 yards and a touchdown. On the defensive end, Silas Egenlauf led the way with eight tackles, while David Harrell added tackles.
Curry got on the board first with a touchdown and a field goal in the opening quarter for the 10-0 lead. The Pioneers were able to answer with a 14 play, 81-yard drive that led to a 25-yard Alexander Caufield field goal. The Colonels responded with a field goal of their own as time expired in the half for the 13-3 lead.
In the third quarter, the Colonels put another touchdown on the board for the 20-3 lead. The Pioneer's defense was able to get a stop deep in their own territory to open the fourth quarter. Then it would only take Justin Horvath and the offense one play to get the Pios back on the board. Horvath connected with Evan Bowen on a wide receiver screen for a 79-yard touchdown, 27-9.
Curry then added 10 more points to their lead, before Alfred State scored their second touchdown of the game. Nicholas Cuomo was able to end an 11-play, 45-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown rush.
The Pioneers will return home next Saturday 10/19 and 12 pm for their conference opener against Dean College.Â
