Pioneers Finish Even Against Panthers

Greensburg, PA- The Alfred State Softball team took one and dropped one in this weekend's double-header against the Pitt-Greensburg Panthers. Game one's score ended in favor of the Panthers 9-1 and game two saw the Pioneers earn a nail-bitter win, 9-8. The Pios are now 9-14 overall and 4-5 vs conference opponents.

Game one:
Sydney Howard took the start in game one and added a loss to her record. Hannah Powers stepped into the circle to relieve Howard in the fourth inning. Offensively, ASC struggled to find their bats as Emma Edwards and Trinity Scott both went 1-3 and Liana Dion and Hailey Lacko went 1-2. Edwards and Dion both notched doubles for their singular hits.

The Panthers stacked their runs on as quickly as they could, plating six runs in two innings. They would then go on to grab three more in the fourth to take a nine-run lead. The Pioneers were only able to tally one run in the fifth as Pitt-Greensburg held control to take the win 9-1.

Game two:
Sophia Petrie saw the mound in game two where she recorded nine strikeouts during her six innings pitched. Petrie earned the win, but Powers came in to close out the game, giving her a save on the day. The Pios bats came to life as Nicole Youngberg went 3-3 with two RBI. Edwards continued her hot bat going 2-4 with 2 RBI and a double and Dion did just the same going 2-3 with 2 RBI.

Alfred State hit the scoreboard first as they grabbed two runs in the first inning. Dion singled to score Youngberg and Edwards. The Panthers were able to tack on a singular run before the Pioneers plated four runs in the second off Edward's double and a single from Youngberg, 6-1. Pitt-Greensburg stayed close behind, notching three runs in the third inning to cut the deficit, 6-4.

The Pios didn't back down, coming into the fifth inning wanting more on the board, Jordyn Colvin sent a sac fly out to center to score one and Hurlbut added an RBI to score Dion. The Panthers also did not give up and they made a comeback to tie the game 8-8. The Pioneers plated the winning run in the seventh off an error that scored Youngberg, 9-8.

ASC is set to head to Penn State Behrend on Wednesday for a double-header, first pitch set for 3 pm.
