Salem, VA- The Alfred State baseball team suffered two losses in their first double header against Roanoke on the road. The Pioneers fall to 0-6 on the season.
Game 1
Caleb Wilson took the narrow loss on the mound in game one while pitching 5.0 innings while recording two strikeouts.
Zach Young went 3-4 scoring one run.
Logan Lutz went 2-3 at the plate with one RBI.
Joey Sanna scored the other Alfred State run while going 1-4.
The Pioneers fell behind early as Roanoke plated two runs in the first inning to take a 2–0 lead.
The Pioneers responded in the third inning when
Jordan Hughes delivered an RBI single to right field, scoring J. Sanna and cutting the deficit to 2–1 while Young moved into scoring position at third.
Alfred State evened the game in the fifth as Lutz ripped a double to right field, bringing home Young (unearned) to tie the score at 2–2 and give the Pioneers momentum midway through the contest.
Roanoke answered in the bottom half of the fifth with an RBI groundout to regain the lead at 3–2. Despite battling throughout the final innings, Alfred State was unable to push across another run as the Maroons held on for the narrow victory.
Game 2
Zach Young led the way offensively, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while
Sean Connor finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Anthony Snyder added two hits, including a double, and
Dylan DeMaro drove in a run with a walk and scored once.
Aiden Cowburn contributed an RBI single as part of the Pioneers' five-RBI effort. On the mound,
Logan Lutz took the loss after allowing five runs over 1.2 innings. Alfred State used five pitchers in the game, combining for five strikeouts. Defensively, the Pioneers committed five errors in the field.
Alfred State struck first in Game 2 as Young doubled to center field in the opening inning, driving in
Dylan DeMaro to give Alfred State a 1–0 lead.
After Roanoke Maroons answered with a five-run first inning, the Pioneers battled back in the second. DeMaro brought home a run on a fielder's choice, and Young followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 5–3.
Alfred State added a run in the sixth on an RBI single from
Aiden Cowburn that scored
Sean Connor, and capped its scoring in the seventh when Connor singled to right field to plate
Frank Grad.
Despite early offense and continued effort at the plate, the Pioneers were unable to keep pace as Roanoke pulled away late, handing Alfred State a 20–5 loss.
The Pioneers will return to action tomorrow Sunday, February 22
nd as take on Roanoke again for another double header and 11am and 3pm.
