ASC Dropped Season Opening Doubleheader


Westfield, IN- The Alfred State baseball team suffered two losses to open their season. They dropped the season opener to Mount Union, 8-4, before dropped one against Baldwin Wallace 19-3.

Game 1 vs Mount Union 8-4

Sean Connor went 1-4 on the day with a homer and two RBIs, while Joey Sanna went 1-3 with a triple and two RBIs. On the mound, Jordan Hughes got the start and suffer the loss as he pitched 3.0 innings and tallied four strikeouts. Zach Miner with was an affective relief pitcher as he tallied three strikeouts.

The Raiders stuck first as they scored a run in the second and third innings, before scoring three runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth. The Raiders scored one more run in the eighth to make it an 8-0 lead.

The Pioneers were able to avoid the shut out in the top of the ninth as they scored four runs. Frank Grad got walked to lead off the inning. Christian Morrison got hit by pitch to follow. Two batters later, Sanna notched a two RBI triple to center field to make it an 8-2 game. Conner then stepped in the box and tallied the Pios first homerun of the season to make it an 8-4 game. The Pioneers couldn't get any closer as they fell 8-4.

Game 2 vs Baldwin Wallace 19-3

Parker Drees went 1-4 with two RBIs, while Jordan Hughes went 1-4 with a double. On the Mound, Logan Lutz suffered the lost as he pitched 4.1 innings and tallied four strikeouts. 

The Yellowjackets scored first as the tallied one run in the first and two runs in the second for the 3-0 lead. The Pioneers tied the game as they scored three runs in the bottom of the second. With one out, Connor got hit by pitch. Justin Angora followed with a single and Matty Eygabroad got walked to load the bases. Drees tallied two RBIs as he reached on a fielders choice which made it a 3-2 game. James Camacho then tallied a single. Sanna followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 3-3.

From there Baldwin Wallace regained the led and never looked back as they won 19-3. The Pioneers will be back in action tomorrow for a doubleheader against Mount Union with first pitch set for 10 am.
