Alfred, NY- The Alfred State women's basketball team took down the Hilbert Hawks, 64-38. The Pioneers move to 15-8 on the season and 10-4 against conference opponents.
Taylor Benjamin led the way with a double-double as she tallied 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Emeline Barton and
Jordan Niles added 14 points each, while
Mallory Sprissler tallied eight points.
After a back and forth start to the first quarter, the Pioneers closed to quarter on a 7-4 run to take a 13-8 lead into the second quarter.
The Hawks came out fast in the second quarter, and Benjamin answered with a three. Sprissler followed with back-to-back layups to force a Hilbert timeout. Following the timeout, Niles added a put-back layup and a free throw to extend the Pioneer led to double figures, 24-12. ASC was able to hold onto their lead the rest of the quarter and headed into the halftime break leading 28-16.
Alfred kicked off the third period of play confidently as they went on a 12-2 run in the opening minutes. Barton, Niles, and Benjamin highlighted the run, stringing consecutive fast break layups together. The Pioneers entered the final frame boasting a comfortable 49-32 advantage.
Alfred remained in control for the remainder of the contest as they managed a double digit cushion until the final horn. The Pioneers will be back in action this Saturday as they head to La Roche for a matchup against the Redhawks. Tipoff is set for 2 pm.
