Alfred State Sweeps Alfred University in Crosstown Rivalry

October 7, 2026, | Terry S. Galanis Family Arena | Alfred, NY – The Alfred State women's volleyball team picked up a dominant 3-0 sweep over Alfred University in Wednesday night's Alfred Cup match up. The Pioneers won by the set scores of 25-13, 25-23, and 25-20. The victory improved Alfred State to 10-7 in the season and showcased a balanced effort on both offense and defense.

Alayna Tomlinson led the Pioneers with an impressive stat line of 10 kills, one ace, and three digs. Isabel Carew paced the offense with 21 assists while adding two aces and three digs. Gloria Stem had a tremendous day at the service line, recording six aces while also contributing six kills and six digs. Brianny Rodriguez added five kills, while Rebecca Jackson chipped in four kills.

Alfred State came out firing in the opening set, cruising to a 25-13 victory. The Pioneers used a dominant 9-2 run led by Rodriguez, who recorded three kills during the stretch, while Tomlinson added two kills. Carew also tallied three assists during the run. Alfred State's serving pressure and blocking presence immediately put the Saxons on their heels and set the tone for the match.

The second set proved to be the most competitive of the evening. Alfred State found itself trailing multiple times but battled back each time. The Pioneers' most impressive stretch came when they trailed 22-16 before closing the set on a 9-1 run to earn a 25-23 victory. Stem was outstanding during the rally, recording three aces and a kill while contributing to six of the Pioneers' nine points. Tomlinson also added a kill during the run as Alfred State completed the comeback.

The third set remained tight early before Alfred State used an 8-2 run to turn a one-point deficit, 9-8, into a 16-11 advantage. Tomlinson led the charge with three kills during the stretch. The Pioneers later closed the match with a 6-3 run, highlighted by two kills from Tomlinson, a kill and an assist from Stem, and a kill and an assist from Erin Gregoire. Alfred State secured the set 25-20 to complete the 3-0 sweep.

Alfred State returns to action on Saturday, October 10, when the Pioneers host SUNY Morrisville at 1 p.m, inside of the Orvis Gymnasium.
