ASC Advances To The Next Round Atter Taking Down The Mounties

Johnstown, PA - The Alfred State baseball team will advance to the next round as they split the day against Pitt-Bradford (6-2) and Mount Aloysius (10-5).

Game 2 (10-5)

In game two, Christpher Mattoon delivered on the mound and got the win while pitching for seven innings. During said time, Mattoon retired three batters and allowed five runs on 11 hits. At bat, Anthony Snyder went 2-3 while tallying two RBIs. Jordan Hughes notched two RBIs as well while hitting 2-5.

Getting into the action, Pios made the initial breakthrough as they scored a run in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs on the board, Caleb Walker hit a homer to start Alfred off strong.

The Pioneers followed up with an even stronger third inning. After Snyder and Zach Young were both walked, Tyler Korsky notched an RBI single to center field. Immediately after, Hughes smacked a double for two RBIs. Frank Grad batted after where he notched a single to right field for an RBI, 5-1. The Pioneers' run finally ended after Devin Mersman tallied a single towards center field which gave Grad the chance to reach home.

Alfred then tacked on two more in the fifth. Hughes and Mersmann both tallied a single to put runners on base. Snyder followed and notched two RBIs when he singled and advanced to second on a throw, and third on an error, 8-0.

The Mounties finally answered the Pios back in the seventh where they put up five runs.

Alfred looked to the put the game further out of reach in 8th. Snyder led off with a single towards left field.  Three batters later, Young hit an RBI single and advanced to third. Young then found home after he advanced on a wild pitch to give the Pioneers a 10-5 lead.

The Pioneers were able to hold off the Mounties in the ninth inning, taking the game 10-5.
 
Game 1 (6-2)

On the mound for game one, Ryan Bailey pitched for 8.2 innings and retired six batters. At the plate, Hughes and Walker each tallied an RBI.

To start the game, both teams had a scoreless first inning.

In the bottom of the second, the Pioneers broke open the game and scored the first run. Starting with a Hughes single towards first base, Young followed with a double over to left field. Finally, Walker laid down an RBI sac bunt which advanced Hughes home, 1-0.

After both teams battled back and forth for two innings, Pitt-Bradford finally answered by scoring their first run to tie the game up 1-1 at the top of the 5th inning. Pitt-Bradford would then score another run at the top of the 8th inning to take a 2-1 lead over the pioneers.

In the top of the 9th inning, Pitt-Bradford tacked on four more runs to make it a 6-1 ball game. Then in the bottom of the half of the inning the Pios would score another run making it a 6-2 ball game. Leading off with an Elijah Barinas single to left field, Barinas then advanced to third on two consecutive wild pitches. Two batters later, Hughes singled to right field which brought Barinas home to score the second run for the Pioneers.

Pitt-Bradford was able to get to last out to hold the Pioneers off and win 6-2.

The Pios will face off against the winner of the Hilbert vs Pitt-Greensburg game. The matchup is set for Friday, April 9th at 3pm.
