Alfred, NY- The Alfred State Women's Volleyball team concluded their season in today's hard-fought championship game against Penn State Altoona, 3-2 (25-18,25-14,25-15,25-14,15-8).

Senior leaders,
Racquel Gerstenberger and
Nayomie Ferrer led the way for the Pioneers in their last match-up. Gerstenberger notched 15 impressive kills, 16 digs and two aces. Ferrer tallied 28 assists, 17 digs and five digs.

The Pios came out strong and fast in the first set, earning a big lead after two Ferrer kills followed by three Lions errors, 20-13. ASC closed and won the set by two Gerstenberger kills and an Altoona error, 25-18. The Pioneers kept their momentum into the second set, as they took an immediate jump by a Gerstenberger kill. The Pios would then go on a 5-point rally consisting of three Gerstenberger kills, and one delivered by
Caitlyn Gilman, 13-7. ASC captured the second set win off an
Alayna Tomlinson ace, 25-14.

Going into the third set, the Pioneers were eager to grab the final set win. Tomlinson nailed five kills throughout the set but, the Altoona Lions dug deep and went on to a 9-point rally to take home the third set win, 25-15. The Lions kept their intensity and momentum going as they were able to take the fourth set as well, 25-14.

The Pioneers never gave up but the Lions wouldn't either. After a hard-fought fifth set, Altoona took home the championship win.

Seniors, Gerstenberger and Ferrer took home All Tournament Team, deservingly. Gerstenberger concluded her career as a Pioneer with an outstanding 1057 kills and 976 digs. Ferrer closed out her career as a Pio with an impressive 2851 assists and 1014 digs, as she hit her 1000
th dig in the semi-final match.
