Van Valen and Mattison Advance to Quarterfinals

George Van Valen (Ithaca) and Ryan Mattison (Brockport) have advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCWA National Championships on Thursday. Five Alfred State wrestlers are still alive after day one.

Van Valen, wrestling in the 184 lb. bracket, earned a 16-0 victory over Steven Crowder (Clemson) in his first match of the day in the round of 32. He then defeated Tyler Rolin (Iowa State Wrestling Club) 11-0 to advance to the quarters. He will take on Brad Kata from Central Florida in the quartefinals tomorrow. Van Valen won a match earlier in the season vs. Kata at the NCWA National Duals.

Mattison won both of his matches in the heavyweight bracket. In the round of 32 he pinned Guillermo Ojeda (UCLA) in 4:06. He then earned a 8-0 victory over Daniel Eslick (Iowa State Wrestling Club) 8-0. He will take on Jesse Gaudin from Central Florida in the quarters.

The trio of Brandyn Whitacre (Jamestown), Mike Galton (Warsaw), and Patrick Lehman (Marathon) all will wrestle in the consolation round of 16.

  • Whitacre was 2-1 on the day in the 235 lb. bracket. He pinned Dominic Johnson (Mott CC) in 4:16 in his first match and then pinned Brandon White (North Texas) in the round of 32. He fell to Sett Brennock (Ohio State Wrestling Club) to move into the consolation bracker where he will wrestled John Huff from Clemson in his first match on Friday.
  • Galton split a pair of matches at 157 lbs. He earnd a 2-0 win over Chris Moodry (Montana Tech) in his opening match and lost a tight battle to Chad Simmons (Apprentice) in the quarterfinals. He will take on Timmy Samec from Clemson on Friday morning.
  • Lehman rebounded from an opening round 2-0 loss to Alejandro Martinez (Wayne State) with a pin of Nathan Abellano (UMBC) to move on. He will take on Pleatheal Roberts from UNLV to start action on Friday. 

Alfred State sits in 15th place after the first day of competition with 31 points. There are 79 teams that competing in the three-day event.
