The Alfred State women's basketball team couldn't fully overcome a 16-point deficit as they fell 77-67 to Medaille on Wednesday evening. The Pioneers cut the lead to four but could not get any closer.
The Mavericks shot 52.6% from the floor in the 1st quarter and raced out to a 22-11 lead. They expanded their lead to as many as 16 in the 2nd quarter before Alfred State cut into the lead and trailed 37-24 at the break. Four minutes into the 3rd, Medaille once again led by 16, 50-34, before the blue & gold started their comeback. A 10-0 run over the next two minutes got the Pioneers right back into the game.
Medaille regrouped and pushed the lead back out to 11, 61-50 as the team's headed into the final ten minutes of the game. Four points by Skylar Shaulis (Ovid/South Seneca) keyed a 8-1 run to start the 4th quarter and cut the lead to 62-58 but the Pioneers would not get any closer. The Mavericks answered with a 9-1 run of their own to put the game out of reach.
Rayanna Anderson (Wellsville) connected on five 3-pointers and led the Pioneers with 22 points. She completed the double-double with 10 assists. Jordyn Pettit (Wellsville) recorded her fourth straight double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds while Kelsey Shaulis (Ovid/South Seneca) chipped in 14. Skylar Shaulis finished the night with nine points and nine rebounds.
The Mavericks starting five played most of the way with four of them finishing in double-figures. Breanna Walker led the team with 21 points (15 in the 1st half) while Jasmine Mott finished with 20. Morgan Kennedy was tough in the paint as she finished with 19 points and 17 rebounds. Amanda Arnold rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11.
Alfred State shot 36% from the floor, 30% from three (6 for 20), and 70% from the foul line while Medaille shot 49.2% from the floor, 26.1% from three, and 68.8% from the foul line.
The blue & gold have a few days off before heading to SUNY Canton next Tuesday for a 2 p.m. contest with the Roos.
