Pioneers Roll to Win at Medaille

Alfred State netted the first six goals as they rolled to a 16-3 victory over Medaille in their AMCC opener. The Pioneers are now 2-4 (1-0 AMCC) on the year.

Six different Pioneers scored in the first 11 minutes of the game to put Alfred State in control. Joe Johnson (Churchville) scored 1:37 into the game, Nathan Crowley (West Irondequoit) scored 11 seconds later, and Nic Covelli (Carmel) scored 41 seconds laster to make it 3-0 later. Neither team could find the back of the net for the next seven minutes before the Pioneers strung toghether another three-goal outburst. AJ Soto (Churchville) scored with 5:07 remaining, Eric Passeck (Thomaston, CT) scored 40 seconds later, and Dominic Arresta (Southhampton) scored 29 seconds later.

The Mavericks scored twice to close out the 1st quarter and scored the first goal of the 2nd quarter but would be held off the board for the final 42:42 of the game. Ian Grana (Greece Odyssey) scored with 11:47 left in the 2nd, Arresta netted his second with 10:15 remaining, and Johnson scored a pair in the final six minutes of the half to complete the hat trick and make it a 10-3 lead at the half.

Cole Reuben (Akron), Covelli, Teddy Alvarado (Hilton), and Branden Dickson (Bath) netted goals in the 3rd for the Pioneers while Grana and Arresta scored in the 4th.

Johnson led the Pioneers with three goals and three assists while Arresta recorded a hat trick. Grana and Covelli each had two goals and an assist, and Alvarado and Passeck each recorded a goal and two assists. Crowley netted a goal and led the team with 15 ground balls. Crowley also won 19 of 22 faceoffs.

Matt Cobb (Churchville) made five saves in net to earn the victory in 54:24 in net while Nate Gardner (Newark) made two saves to cap the game.

Tyler Fales, David Cloy, and Enrique Perez all scored once while Jake Rush was credited with three assists.

The Pioneers held a 61 to 16 shot advantage and picked up 58 ground balls. Alfred State won 19 of 22 of the faceoffs and were 23 for 24 on clear attempts.

The blue & gold are back in action next Saturday when they take on Hilbert. The Pioneers and Hawks met last season in the finals of the AMCC Showcase.
