Men's Cross Country: 3rd at AMCC Championships

The men's cross country team had several personal bests as the Pioneers finished 3rd out of nine teams at the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championships held at Penn State Behrend on Saturday. The Pioneers scored 91 points in the event.

Gavin Bathgate (East Rochester) was the top finisher for the Pioneers on the 8k course. He finished 10th in 26:56.8 (5:25/mile). Jacob Drew (Corning Painted Post) was 17th (28:32.1), Matt Connolly (Elmira Notre Dame) was 23rd (29:24.3), Cooper Buckley (Wellsville) was 24th (29:27.5), and Austin Miller (Hornell) was 28th (29:53.5) to round out the top five finishers.

Women's Cross Country: 3rd at AMCC Championships

Caitlin Caltagirone (Holland) led the women's cross country team as the Pioneers finished 3rd out of eight teams at the AMCC Championships. The Pioneers scored an 80 in the competition that featured runners from eight schools.

Caltagirone finished 6th on the 6k course to lead the Pioneers. She crossed the finish line in 24:16.3 (6:30/mile). Four Pioneers finished in a pack to round out the top finishers for the blue & gold. Sarah Rivet (Waterford/Shenendehowa) was 20th (26:59.7), Katie Watkins (Addison) was 21st (27:04.7), Kate Frascella (Franklinville) was 22nd (27:39.7), and Molly Heaphy (Long Island Lutheran) was 23rd (27:45.4).

Football: 3-6, 1-3 ECFC

The Alfred State offense accumulated 533 yards of total offense but a last minute rally fell short as the Pioneers fell 50-46 on the road at Dean. The two teams combined for 96 points and 1,068 yards of offense.

The teams traded touchdowns throughout the 1st half. Alfred State went into halftime with a slight 27-25 lead. The Bulldogs scored on their first two possessions to take the lead for good. The Pioneers had two chances in the final minutes to take back the lead but the Bulldog defense stopped two drives with interceptions.

Dashown Wilson (Bronx/DeWitt Clinton) finished the day 14 for 28 for 279 yards and four touchdowns to go along with 217 yards rushing and three touchdowns (34 carries). David Carroll (Mastic/Center Moriches0 finished with five catches for 107 yards and two scores while Shy'rel Broadwater (Syracuse/Cicero North Syracuse) had three catches for 89 yards and two scores.

Jeremiah Nixon (Staten Island/Curtis) led the Pioneer defense with nine total tackles (six solo) and 1.5 tackles for a loss. Hunter Kruger (Panama City, FL/Deane Bozeman) added five solo tackles (six total).

Men's Soccer: 1-15, 1-9 AMCC

David Benson (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) scored the lone goal for Alfred State as the Pioneers wrapped up the 2019 season at D'Youville. Benson tied the game in the 1st but the Spartans scored four unanswered in the 2nd en route to a 5-1 victory.

Women's Soccer: 2-12-1, 2-7 AMCC

Althea Prime (Cherry Valley Springfield) scored her third of the season as Alfred State closed out the 2019 season at D'Youville. The Spartans earned the 3-1 victory. Prime scored in the 78th minute to cut the Spartan lead to 2-1 but the Pioneers could not get any closer.

Men's Swimming & Diving: 2-1, 0-1 AMCC

The men's swimming & diving team won both ends of a tri-match vs. Buffalo State and Fredonia on Saturday. The Pioneers defeated Buffalo State 141-115 and Fredonia 138-132.

Matt Walker (Kenmore West) was a triple individual event winner. He won the 200 free in 1:49.52 to set a new NCAA DIII era record. He also won the 200 breast in 2:18.96 and the 200 IM (2:05.25). Westin Perry (Canisteo Greenwood) and Ryan Jobe (Gananda) each won a pair of events. Perry won the 100 back in 56.47 and the 200 back in 2:04.86. He was also 2nd in the 50 free (23.31). Jobe won the 1m diving competition with a score of 119.93 and the 3m with 127.73 points.

Nate Miller (Gananda) won the 100 breast in 1:04.73 and was 3rd in the 100 fly (57.28) while Ethan Dale (Lock Haven, PA) was 2nd in both the 200 breast (2:27.00) and the 200 IM (2:09.82) and was 3rd in the 200 fly (2:09.02). Austin Eckrich (Churchville Chili) was 2nd in both the 1,000 free (11:02.94) and the 500 free (5:18.46), Stuart Yates (Naples) was 2nd in the 100 breast (1:06.76) while Anthony Kahwaty (Jefferson Township, NJ) was 3rd in the 100 breast (1:07.67). The 200 medley relay team of Perry, Dale, Miller, and Walker finished 2nd in 1:42.71.

Women's Swimming & Diving: 0-3, 0-1 AMCC

The women's swimming & diving team traveled to Buffalo and competed vs. Buffalo State and Fredonia. The Pioneers fell in both ends of the tri-meet. They lost 138-127 to Buffalo State and 161-93 to Fredonia.

Mikaela Snayczuk (Pioneer) led the way for the team. She won the 100 breast in 1:17.21 and was 2nd in the 200 free (2:11.51). Sarah Stevens (Wellsville) was 2nd in the 50 free (28.07), 2nd in 1m diving (199.73), and 3rd in the 200 IM (2:35.25), Payton Armstrong (Monroe Woodbury) was 2nd in the 100 back (1:10.53) and 3rd in both the 200 back (2:33.16) and the 100 fly (1:11.69), and Alina Kisluk (Hamburg) was 3rd in the 1,000 free (12:21.59), 3rd in the 100 free (1:01.08), and 3rd in the 500 free (5:57.62). Kelsey Lynch (Wellsville) was 2nd in the 200 fly (2:41.67). The 200 medley relay team of Armstrong, Snayczuk, Lynch, and Kisluk finished 2nd in 2:06.07 to start the meet.

Volleyball: 10-14, 3-7 AMCC

The volleyball team had a busy final week of the 2019 season. The team went 1-3 on the week. They defeated Keystone 3-1 but fell 3-0 to Penn State Behrend and 3-1 to both Houghton and Wells.

Alyssa Fox (Letchworth) led the team with 43 kills and 44 digs while Kiara Perkins (Coudersport, PA) finished with 40 kills, 45 digs, and 14 service aces. Jordan McCooey (Horseheads) passed out 116 assists and had 10 aces, Jordan Stauffenecker (Lansing) led the team with 55 digs, and Mya VanDuyne (Newark) chipped in 15 kills and six blocks.

Western Equestrian: High Point Team in both AM/PM Shows

The Western Equestrian team finished as the High Point team in both the AM and PM shows at Alfred University on Saturday. Senior Alyssa Beardsley (Letchworth) was the reserve high point rider in both shows while Brianna Lasecki (Newark) and Morgan Maas (Churchville Chili) qualified for Regionals.

Beardsley was 1st in both the AM and PM in Reining and was 2nd in both shows in open horsemanship. Lasecki won her ride at Rookie B to qualify for Regionals in that classification and then rode in the Level 1 competition in the PM show while Maas finished 3rd in Rookie B in the PM show to qualify for Regionals in that class.

In the AM show, Leeanna Bianchi (Hilton) won in Level 2 while Mairead Aripotch (Montauch), Joseph Canna (Starpoint), Sydnee Ganoung (Allegany Limestone), Ashley Herbert (Spencerport), and Paige Skinner (Campbell Savona) all earned 2nd place finishes. In the PM show, Jennifer Cirigliano (Brewster) won in Rookie A, Jinean Erickson (Holden, MA) won in Beginner, Ganoung won in Beginner, Arianna Gordon (Genesee Valley) won in Rookie B, Herbert won in Rookie B, and Skinner won in Level 1. Airpotch, Bianchi, Canna, and Daphne Garcia (Lincoln) finished 2nd.

Wrestling: 8 place winners at Brockport Open

The wrestling team had eight place winners as they opened up the 2019-20 season at the Brockport Open. Kyle Fitzgerald (Constableville/South Lewis) led the way with a 3rd place finish.

Fitzgerald fell in his opening match of the day in the heavyweight bracket but was able to bounce back with five straight victories. He defeated Raymond Murry (NCCC) 7-0, won a sudden victory 3-1 decision over Leroy Williams (NCCC), pinned Kiar Parker (Unattached), and got revenge for his earlier loss with a pin of Jaquan Johnson (Unattached) to advance to the 3rd place match. In the 3rd place match, Fitzgerald earned his third straight pin as he sealed 3rd with a fall just 19 seconds into the match. 

Anthony Miraglia (Byron Bergen) was 3-2 at 157 lbs. to earn 4th, Owen Kissell (Alden) was 3-2 at 141 to earn 5th while Jesse Johnson (Horseheads), Brian Hedding (Rush Henrietta), Michael Peck (Selden/Newfield), Blake Ilges (Canisteo Greenwood), and Nicholas Barrett (Avoca) all earned 6th place finishes.
