Alfred State freshman Julia Russell (Candor) has been named the American Collegiate Athletic Association female cross country athlete of the week. She was honored along with Ross Klocke from Thomas More in the weekly awards.
Russell, in her first collegiate race, was the top Pioneer finisher on the women's team and finished 19th overall at the Houghton Short Course Twilight Invitational on Friday with a 4K time of 16:15.7 (6:33 per mile). Russell and the Pioneers finished 4th in the season opening meet out of seven teams that competed.
Russell and the Pioneers are back in action on Saturday when they travel up the road to compete at Alfred University on the Jericho Hill course. Racing is slated to begin at Noon and following a pair of high school races.
